Betty Crocker Points

| | Comments (93)

I've been clipping these things off my cereal boxes for years, and they've recently changed the way they handle point redemption. Let's see if this is worth our time! Read on!

Betty Crocker Points Program Review ** Update, 3/06: This program will be discontinued in 2006; more info here.

How You Earn Them
They're found on the boxes of General Mills products, including GM cereals, Gold Medal Flour, Hamburger Helper, Pop Secret popcorn, and Nature Valley Granola Bars.

What Can You Get With Them
Discounts on merchandise sold from Betty Crocker's online catalog, found at http://www.bettycrocker.com/bettyStore/store/home.aspx

How Does it Work?
The catalog used to sell items for two prices, a cash only price and a price with points. Now they've made it unnecessarily complicated, with THREE pricing levels: cash only, 10% off, and 25% off...and it's not per item but based on the total cost of all your items. For 10% off, you just send in 25 points with your order. To get 25% off, the number of points you send in depends on your merchandise total:

Up to $50: send in 50 points
$50-100: 100 points
$100-150: 150 points
$150+: 250 points

Is It Worth It?
You tell me.

Betty Crocker's Christmas Cookbook
At BC with the max point savings of 25% off: $14.99
Amazon's price: $9.99

Pillsbury Complete Cookbook
At BC with the max point savings of 25% off: $19.49
Amazon's price: $18.87

5-1/2 qt Le Creuset Round French Oven, Blue
At BC with 25% off: $131.24 ** ooh, BC does win this one!
Amazon's price: $174.99

T-Fal 10.5" Square Griddle
At BC with 25% off: $23.24
Amazon's price: $19.99

So...with that one exception, I see absolutely no use for saving up points for those "discounts."

Now I have a friend who SWEARS that she's getting an awesome deal on Oneida flatware by using BC points. First off, you need to know that the Oneida flatware sets sold through BC are "made exclusively for Betty Crocker," meaning that if you need to find replacements at some later time, you better hope BC still has them because they're the only folks who sell those patterns. Second off, the prices aren't that great compared to sets you can find elsewhere.

Oneida (18/8 stainless) 20pc Service for Four, Camelot or Clarette Patterns, with 25% through BC: $56.24
Oneida (18/8 stainless) 20 pc Service for Four, American Harmony or Sand Dune Patterns, regular Amazon price: $34.99

The Final Verdict
If you gotta clip something off those Betty Crocker brand packages, clip the Boxtops for Education...at least your school gets 10c each for those. The Betty Crocker points don't get you anything you can't get elsewhere for cheaper and with no clipping!

Interesting related article here.

Also -- if you use Betty Crocker products, do you use Duncan Hines also? They have a rewards program also -- read more about it here!

WE sent away for the free catalog and discover the same thing: no savings on most items. Infact I can get a lot of BC, Betty Crocker, stuff cheaper at a supersized supermarket or an outlet

After saving these things for years and getting some good deals in the past, I recently discovered the changes they made in the program. As a result, last week I cleaned out a drawer in my kitchen threw out thousands of those little suckers. I had been hoping that Betty Crocker would get better (ie: more points/less cash), but the opposite happened. I'll never feel guilty throwing those boxtops out again!

I've been trying to enter the drawing for the KitchenAid Mixer -- and there is no place to enter -- Is this a gimmick??? Betty Crocker sent me many leaflets but there is no place to enter as they advertised. Something is fishy!!!

I like the betty crocker catalog for unusual items like the rolling pin with thickness guides that I had been looking for for years! and the set of cake displays that match beautifully....

Yes, some things are definitely not worth it, but it is very nice for unusual things and the one stop catalog/internet shopping for lots of gifts at one time. No driving around for numerous different things.

Dear Betty Crocker, Perhaps you could issue a clearance catalog for all your faithful long time patrons ,so that we can afford the privilege of using our gift points. Respectfully Yours Cheri Murray

I had saved those years ago. Then I got the catalog and decided NO WAY! I thought the prices were too steep. Now, I agree, that if you can't find a product anywhere else, why not buy from the catalog.? But, I would certainly do some comparison shopping first.
I don't think the BC points have anything to do with the schools. Just the Box Tops For Education.

I do agree that some of this stuff is pretty expensive but they do have some really cool items I have never seen anywhere else. I was wondering if anyone has a hundred points they don't want. I just need that to be able to get a kitchen island.
Thank you so much.

I used to count the boxtops for education for my school and cut off the bcpoints too. I wish there was a way to get cash for the school with all the points they don't need cents off kitchen items.

I have a bunch of points too. I (like many others it seems) thought it either helps the schools or at least get free or cheap items (anyone remember greenback stamps???) I don't why just assumeed

Posted by: Richard Weil
Date: January 2, 2006 12:21 PM

Called the company and they said that since Aug 04 points are indeed only good for shipping. (I'm not sure how much they even care about that since the website says you can send the points after getting the product.) The customer person said she'd pass on my comments to marketing. I suggest everybody who doesn't like this new system should also let them know (1-800-446-1898). It wouldn't hurt to mention that you're more likely to buy from competitors too. If anybody has stock in General Mills how about putting in a shareholder's resolution to change the system back? The Board of Directors will then have to explain why it was altered.

Don't know why they did it except that greed is presumably in the mix. Too bad; expected better of the company.

I am extremely disappointed in the new program of the discontinuation of points to use as a discount on products. I have been a loyal user of points and ordering from the catalog and now have hundreds of points I am stuck with. Most items can be purchased for much less at large grocery stores or discount stores.
After speaking to customer service I got the opinion that not a whole lot of changes are going to be made.

HI, I just counted my silverware and need 5 forks, 2 knives and 10 spoons. Lord knows where they went. I looked on the internet to find the pattern and found several (35 rose named patterns) and not one was my rose pattern. It is a single long stemmed rose. Onieda Community Stainless is on the back. I've been married since 1977 and got these from my mom for a shower gift, I'm sure she got them through the Better Crocker coupon point system. If anyone has any they want to sell, e-mail me, or if you know where I could order them. Thanks, Pam

I just started saving the points, and it seems to me (and alot of people here)that it isn't even worth it anymore. Free shipping. that's what you can get. Free shipping on items that are overpriced to begin with. :-( I really wish they'd find something better to use as an incentive.

Hello,
I have read a few of the questions and some relate to questions I have.
I have asked to have a catalog sent to my address, to date, don't have one...it's been more than a month. Is it on the way?
Also, if I have points, a lot of points...that have expired, can I send them in to receive the same amount of points? This way I can use them. You know I had actually bought BC products to have obtained the points, just hadn't redeemed them. I know it can't truly be too late, right?

Thanks,
Kelly

So glad I found this site. Comfort in numbers. I was so embarrassed when I realized the BC points I had been so carefully clipping all these years were pretty much worthless! I hate falling victim to marketing gimmicks. Yet, I will save a few of my 1500+ points just for old time's sake. I remember redeeming green stamps years ago as a young bride and wish now I had kept a couple of books as a memento.

Frustrated!

Our local paper said that people had BC points that they wanted to donate to a good cause before the expiration. I thought, "We have a non-profit youth group. We can get items, make gift baskets, and auction them. Use the $ for scholarships." So I offered to take the points. My address was published in the paper.

Now I have THOUSANDS of points, but after looking at the BC catalog, I realize that there's no reason to have more than 250, because with 250 you get the maximum discount on your total purchase. And I'd still have to pay a substantial amount of money to get enough items to make the gift baskets.

Posted by: Joyce
Date: October 20, 2006 3:34 PM

I have saved many points over the years and only used a few for items when they were on the outlet sale, including a now discontinued pattern of Oneida. One appliance item broke shortly after receiving, and I was reimbursed. In general, most things in the catalogs can be purchased elsewhere much cheaper.
It is disappointing that the system did not improve with age! I will treasure the few Betty Crocker momentos I have, and pass them on to my children. Perhaps eBay may see them in another decade!

I just went to the website.

THE CATALOG IS CLOSED AS OF DEC 16, 2006. YOU CAN'T GET IT, YOU CAN'T ORDER STUFF ANY MORE.

The ONLY thing you can do according to the website is to send them 100 points and they'll qualify you to save 10% off on COOKING.COM. Of course you can't buy just any of the items on the COOKING website,....many of the main brand names are exempt from the discount.

Ladies.......
They said they were closing down, they extended the date.....then they closed. I have a ton of points I'll never use. If anyone wants them I'd be happy to mail them to you but ......
IT WOULD BE SMARTER TO BUY OFF OF EBAY, use the mailed for 20% off at BED BATH AND BEYOND...or just buy at Marshall's, TJ Maxx or Ross.

YOU CAN'T USE YOUR POINTS TO BUY STUFF ANYMORE!

Posted by: Mary Franklin
Date: February 28, 2007 9:03 PM

mailed = mailer (typo)

I have some Oneida flatware I got from BC when it used to be 11.99 a place setting! he heee... I think they call it the Regal pattern. I have a knife and a tablespoon if anyone wants or needs them, email me and I'll mail them to you.

If you ladies would like a cool points system... I subscribe to mybonuspoints.com and have been for the last 5 years. You read articles and respond to ads and can get 5 points for just answering an email. I buy all my office supplies from Office Depot and I use my points code so I get points for it, all my restaurant purchases on my VISA are tracked through this system and I've already collected over 45,000 points. I have redeemed two different $50 gift certificates to Macy's and gotten a few American Express gift certificates....so, this one really works. You can read their articles and ads, for free. You respond, for free...and they reward you with real money. No discounts, no points, no overcharging. It's a great program and I bought a $50 baby gift at Target for a friend at no cost to myself except a little time here and there.

Let me know by email if anyone wants my cardboard points, or the pieces of flatware.

Yes, I was very angry too for wasting my time. But, I think I have all of you beat! When cleaning out some old paperwork today, I found a large envelope from years ago filled with hundreds of points (mainly from Cheerios) along with an order form and coupon certificates that were returned to me because whatever I ordered was out of stock or I maybe miscounted and shorted them 10 points. (Can't tell from the returned order form, sent back 740 and what I ordered needed 750.) Needless to say I never oredered again, but I kept saving them for some odd reason--guilt for throwing money away!!! I have been collectiong the BC points for 40 years, since the day after my honeymoon. I have moved 6 times, had a bad fire and still managed to save 2,947 worthless points. (I just had to count them.) So today I was ready to order and get rid of these suckers. I was so excited to finally get the points all together, order something and stop this foolish obsession--truth be know, my four children have hassesed me over the years about saving the points, I didn't want them to find them when they unearthed my pocessions after I died. Or worse, just throw them out without giving them a second thought. One of my daughters was in tears laughing as she informed me that they were no longer valid. Shame on Betty Croker for not using any advertising money to inform the public not to waste their time any longer saving the points. An shame on you BC for showing that Mother doesn't alway know best. But thank you Betty Crocker and General Mills for a fun filled afternoon with my grown daughter, and thank you Betty Crocker for the stories that will be told about this thrifty mother. And a lesson learned--Saving is not always a good thing.
PS If anyone has a good use for these points, let me know, you may have all 2,947 of mine!!

Maybe Duncan Hines will redeem the Betty Crocker points to steal BC's old customers! That'd be a great plan.

Let Betty Crocker/General Mills know how you feel!

I just found out you discontinued the points program. How awful!

I have been collecting for years. My great grandmother and my grandmother spoke highly of it when I was a kid, so it kind of stuck. All of that saving for nothing. Horrible!

I find it very disappointing. I often wonder why companies make these decisions. Some new VP of something or some executive officer decides he wants to cut costs somewhere. Cut the points program. What does he/she care? Bottom line is $$. So for one year there is a increased margin and that VP/exec touts how great they are. Course, in the long run, you've just alienated customers. In the long run, you'll lose more money. Shame. I wish there was accountability in a corporation for decisions like this.

But I imagine there is a group of people who were just thrilled about this -- Duncan Hines. They'll be getting my business now.

I have 9,000 plus points. After reading a few of the comments now lets get serious, what does a person do with them or is the trash the best solution. Any way for anyone to use them at all. Would appreciate your comment quickly. t. y. linda craft in nashville tn

Still shocked that I spent so much money investing in Oneida Community Stainless using these "points" that I saved for years, only to have the Betty Crocker Catalogue close up shop months later, after I finally got started purchasing my dream pattern. I thought I would be able to add to my set "for a Lifetime" as Oneida likes to say, which was the joy of collecting it. Instead, Betty Crocker and also Oneida let us all down. Oneida should have at least made the items available through them directly. I don't think the points are of any value at all anymore, since the catologue no longer exists. You may want to save some for your grandchildren as they may have some sort of historical value someday.

Not only cut the program but look how small the boxes are too. You may think it is on sale but smaller and more on sale then the old ones. Oh well, corporate takes over and over and over! Shame on you!

We have been saving for years and finally have enough points to get NOTHING???? We are on a very limited budget and was looking forward to getting something special that we wouldn't normally buy on one disability check as the only means of income. We have just finished counting them all and I got on the internet to get a catalog. We have 28,868 points. I guess we wasted our time and energy. Makes me almost glad I can't afford the Betty Crocker name brand products and have to buy Walmart's store brand at best. Talk about bursting our bubble!!!!!!

I, too have saved these points for many years. I bought flatware for both of my sisters, and started hope chests with flatware for both of my daughters and all of my flatware came from there, too. I couldn't always afford to buy a lot, true, but it was less expensive than buying the same quality from Oneida (yes, I realize that it was Oneida, simply different variations). I ended up throwing away more than 100,000 points. The good news is that there are enough of us that were in the middle of a collection, that there are quite often really good deals on what we are looking for on Ebay......
